On a culture trip with Gustav Klimt (The Artist Trail – Klimt on the Attersee)

Even the famous art nouveau painter Gustav Klimt appreciated lake Attersee in order to find inspiration for his paintings.

Between 1900 and 1916 Klimt spent numerous summer holidays at lake Attersee. Famous for his allegories as well as portraits of the ladies Klimt discovered landscape painting quite lately. Amongst the popular paintings of Klimt today there are more than 50 landscape paintings, most of them originate from the summer holidays at lake Attersee.
100 years after Klimt’s first stay at the lake “The Artist Trail – Klimt on the Attersee” invites you to follow the tracks of the grand Viennese art nouveau painter.

24 panels provide you with information about Gustav Klimt’s sojourns in the region and thus guide you around lake Attersee. The emphasis of the Artist Trail is on those villages, where some of the landscape paintings have their origin. These villages are primarily those in which Klimt spent his summer holidays and can be found along the North shore and the South shore of the lake (Litzelberg, Kammer, and Weißenbach). The panels along the promenade of Seewalchen give account of Klimt’s life and works. Therefore the panels on the promenade in Seewalchen offer a good starting point for your tour.

Some of these panels are moveable and contain 2 square cuttings. Looking through these square cuttings you can, like Klimt did more than a hundred years ago, via a so-called ‘searcher’ made of cardboard create your own ‘Klimt landscape’. Information in German and in English, many paintings, and historic photographs guide you through this ‚expedition’.

Accompanied by a Klimt guide you can discover everything about Gustav Klimt from his exciting private life to the working conditions of his times and his sojourns at lake Attersee. Klimt guides are available from May to the end of September or at special request at the Information.
